‘twas one time ago I stumbled into a great Helvetica lookalike and other famous font, and lately I added some to the collection.

TeX Gyre Heros | FREE DOWNLOAD

Heros is the best, free for commercial use, and well done by GUST e-foundry.

Bebas Neue | FREE DOWNLOAD

Bebas Neue is my new favourite font. It’s a little bit condensed and lack of small letters. So it may be good only for display and headings.

Coolvetica | FREE DOWNLOAD

Looks great just like Helvetica, except for the long tails. It destroy the clean and serious looking Helvetica. I will just use Heros instead, but it’s good to have in the list, just in case.

Liberation Sans | FREE DOWNLOAD

I personally don’t like so much Liberation Sans as Helvetica lookalike. I would prefer Heros. (hehehe, I’m so loving Heros)

AdBlock-ing KL, the easiest way

I was planning to clear my view from any ads in KL. I wish that prank of AdBlock on April fool was a real deal. Never mind, I found an exciting alternative; to replace it with a piece of art; seaview.

No Port Dickson talking, I promise. I knew it before you say it. PD talking is bloated and it just lame to blog about it. This time is Port Klang’s North Port, Tanjung Harapan (or The Esplanade). The big rival to Bagan Lalang in the battle of which place have the freshest, cheapest local seafood. It’s a Kl trip and 100% public transportation

How long to go? An hour and fifteen minutes
How much to pay for transport? RM4.60 for KTM, RM 12 for Taxi

Verdict: Should try this before going to Bagan Lalang

The duration from Putra to Port Klang station is an hour fifteen minutes. From the station, we took a taxi nearby the KTM station to Tanjung Harapan, saying to the driver to go the seaside, not the golf club, it's nearby anyhow. We reached there at 5.30pm which is very ideal because after 6pm, in the weekend, many people start to find parking slot and there’s many more coming. I was there at 4.30, it seem a little bit too early but there’s things to see;

dissolving myself looking at the widescreen of the seaside, tracking the slow movement of the ships, or if you are lucky, sail-boat or yacht.

The food was spectacular. We dine at Muara Ikan Bakar restauran. I ordered Siakap grilled for RM30, 3 squid grilled gor RM9, one steamed crab 60cent (unbelievable!!!! I know) and Nasik Lemak RM3 (if you intend to focus more on seafood, go with plain rice)

The Four Delicious Orders

The view was bloody crimson. The seafood was mouthwatering to blog about and also there is a serious change of the breeze. Clean air unlike the city centre of Kuala Lumpur.

There's a minor problem, there's no taxi to go home. But there's a solution to that. We call the taxi stand to send us back to the KTM station and it cost us RM15. It's a nice KL escape. Try it.

Ha ha ha, being force to look at the ads everyday after work, I realize that, it is a youPhone (very subliminally). What a silly idea to recycle what have been used from Apple. If it is for a China fake imitation ow-end phone, I don't mind at all, it's their nature, but a from giant, senior hand phone maker? hmmm.. Don't let me go to Samsung and their UI. It is saddening me to see it's Android UI customized to look like the step sister of the iPhone. (the ugly and wannabe one, you know the kind)

How to give your blog an interface-lift and increase readability

Do you wonder why your blog looks so darn ugly no matter how much you put glitters around it? The answer lies behind the fonts, not the half-done Photoshop filter effects 'design'.

Based on my observation, almost all well known websites using this ultimate typefaces combination;

"Georgia Bold & Italic for header + Arial 13pt for body."

If this is the winning recipe for major article websites, it is definitely will work for you. Go ahead and try, you will see immediate change in readability aesthetic. In more technical word, Serif for header, and san-serif for body. The reason why to use Georgia and not Times New Roman is that, Georgia is fatter in the serif and the second reason is that, never, never, never ever use default Microsoft Times New Roman & Calibri fonts on anything except formal stuff like letter and your assignment (Papyrus & Comic Sans are forbidden like you-know-who in Harry Potter). Arial is more curvier than Verdana but not too curvy than Trebuchet which make it perfect.

look at the tail of the 'y'

13pt for size is a nice trick to go away from default 12 hence change the mood and improve readibility.

If your blog have a lot of quotes, let your Georgia header bold only, not Italicize. In the quotes, you can use Georgia italic and see how beautiful it will be. Nice contrast of attention (header, quotes) and focus (body) functions.

Two great documentaries (Helvetica and Objectified) directed by Gary Hustwit about the relationship between design and human. In my opinion, these two are must have for any starter graphic designers in order to understand what design is all about. For ordinary human (non-designer), these two documentaries are going to open your eyes and start realizing the world around you and you will never see things the same way you did anymore.

Art & Copy directed by Doug Pray made me realize that behind every graphic designer, there is a copywriter. These two are able to solve anything. I used Grid, Smart Guides and Guide to layout this poster. Turned out it look neat and clean. All thumbnails are with white background and I used Multiply for Blending Option and base the colored part with another layer to mask the Multiply. Sorry, I don’t know how to explain about it well. I highly disagree with oversized font for the contact information, but I was worried if it is not attention grabbing enough (kinda annoying though!)

YES with a Huddle modem (a MiFi router actually), YES, you got connection everywhere in the covered area.

But after using the modem, I noticed that, the modem must be static to channel the connection. HAHAHA, I cannot walk while IM, surf while in LRT, or using Google maps in my car.
So, is it really mobile?
NO! Tested and it works (but still if the Huddle modem is not stable, connection is lost, so it applies only to walking while the modem is in your pocket.)

How I did my LingApp movie review

Well, when I took the subject last semester, me and my group mates need to clip the whole movie to show on a presentation. So I was puzzled on how to split the movie excessively like every 10 seconds, pain-free and last minute job.

I believe there's already a software on my computer to do that (I thought it was Windows Movie Maker, but it's not)

It's PowerPoint 2010 (not sure in 2007 and 2003, well you can check it out), oh, I killed two birds with one stone. Exact quality as the original, user friendly clipping method, and ready on slides. So let see how I did it.

Fire up your PowerPoint (it should goes without saying)

Right click on the left sidebar's slide, click Layout, and choose Blank, to get a nice clean layout slide. I always do this to all slides, default layouts are lame anyway. Load your movies by going to Insert and click Video. Do not drag and drop as it won't load as video but files
.
It takes time as it copy the file into the programme. My machine is 2.2Ghz Core2Duo with 4GB of RAM but still it took long time. Hope you are lucky to get it copied.
We will use this first slide with complete duration of the movie as a base of the movie that we want to clip, so Ctrl+C/Ctrl+V to make things easier, later.

Under the Video tab you will see Trim Video, Aha!
Well, it has Bookmarks feature too, but I won’t use it as there’s too much things to control; Seek, Play, Pause. While clipping will let you play a start and stop video with one click. Neat.

Point to your start time and stop time, there’s also a box to type in the hour, minute, and second for a precise clipping. Well that’s it, click OK and then maybe you can check out some other features like Play Full Screen, and Start On Click or Automatically. I personally let it not play in Full screen and Start On Click so it gives me control while I deliver my speech about the clip.

For the next clipping, Ctrl+V the slide that you already copied before, the one with the file loaded in the slide, it just easier than to Right Click, Duplicate Slide, and Dragging.

When you are saving, let it take it’s time, don’t do anything while in the process, because any interruption will bring you back to square one and oh, I did disable auto save because the files I load are too big and making the whole process laggy..

Ok, for a very long time I hadn't do any modern typo type posters. For those who familiar with my posters, they 'ill know what is my style. Torn paper, goth and vintage/Olde! What to do, I love old things very much, I adore every one of them. To me, modern is ugly, UGLY -UGLY!

However, when I'm lazy, I do a modern poster instead of time consuming with WOW mouth-watering designs of old school poster, Ok I'm exaggerating too much, haha.

About this poster, it is still in beta state, many things need to be redone, typo and space management. The title is a celup from a magazine style that i recently bought. It is from Folio magazine.

A No0b guide to dissambling laptop case

Why would you ransack your precious laptop? Well, I won't waste my saliva if it is no use of doing so. Ones may operate their laptop for several reason. To name a few, I opened my laptop to clean underneath the keyboard layer, to do a little housekeeping in the fan and heat sink, and my sole intention in the first place is to repaint/mod my laptop casing. So, in this post, we will focus on doing it for painting purpose as it is taking you to take off the whole laptop and see him completely naked! Aww.

Ok, what do you need before we jump-start to destroy your lappy? First, the complete tool for electronic devices such as the right screwdrivers (non-magnetic), a few steel plate (shape like manicure tool, optional), a few cups for storing the screws, mini flashlight (optional) and a manual guide of your laptop (downloadable on your laptop manufacturer website).

Now we have the right tools, make sure you write down (or print would be a very good idea) all the information needed from the manual guide and this guide. Shut down your computer and remove all the attaching wires and USBs. Turn your laptop upside down (the base facing up, and the front panel facing you), remove the battery and unscrew all the screws in the battery porthole.

Now, turn it back to normal viewing, open your lid (the screen) as far as possible, and using some plate of steel, force open your first cover (commonly the area of the power button, sound button). Put the plate at the opening holes located underneath the upper keys of |Esc| , |F1|, |F5|, |F12| and |Insert| . The holes might be vary on different models, but it should be nearby, and refers to your manual if you seriously cannot find the hole. Do this carefully and at your own risk, flashlight come handy in this situation. If you success in this part, then we proceed to the keyboard, unscrews all keyboard screws, it should be nearby the holes and look for any attachment of the keyboard before lifting it out. Take out the keyboard, and you will see a ribbon wires attach the keyboard to the casing, unattach it. It should be easy, and carefull with the wires, unlock the ribbon by the sides of the female reciever side locks. Take out, and clean the underneath keyboard (mine is pretty disgusting) before we proceed.

Unscrew all the screws under the keyboard, close the lid of your laptop, and turn it over again, unscrew all the screws you see on the base enclosure. Remove the hard disk, wireless adapter and ram lids. Carefully emergency eject your cd-rom drive by using a pin/needle/wire inject it in the small peekhole near the eject button. Force it a little bit, and properly, it will be ejected. Take out your hard disk, put someplace safe. Force taking out the base enclosure, but carefull enough to know if any screws you missed to unscrew. If you done it properly, the base enclosure will easily to remove, and if not, make the manual as your good friend.

Phew~, what a guide, but we are not done yet. Now, do some cleaning if you like and after that, remove the screws on your fan. Then proceed to the heatsink, which is underneath the fan, then the processor, located underneath the heatsink. Refer your manual and see if there is anything beside things mention before that need to be removed before taking out the up cover of the laptop. Now, turn the laptop as usual view, open the lid, and see if any screw left that still attaching the motherboard to the up cover. If not, there you go, remove the up cover, and you get yourself a motherboard full of chips.

Haha, I got some confession to make, actually, I never got to do it as far as removing the heatsink because it is too dangerous, well if you are an adventurous human whoo take risk then do it. It can be done, it is not rocket science but I can't afford to lose my laptop. hee hee

Reverse all the procedures, and switch on your laptop again. If it is blinking showing no sign of loss such ass the keyboard or any LEDs, then you are now ready to paint your laptop. Buy some primer undercoat for plastic, wet sandpaper, crack repair cement for plastic (optional), your favourite colour for the laptop, gloss finish clear paint, and car wax/paint heal kit (optional). Make some stencil if you like. Why we open the laptop first and then buy the paint stuff? Well, it saves you a bit and make a good practice first before doing the process, maybe you will end up like me to chicken to ransack all the compenent of your laptop.

Disamble the laptop again, do the painting procuderes in someplace safe, not windy or dusty and leave it dry. Make it several layer, but not to thick. The reason is to let the edge stays intact so it would fit the board. After you done painting, sand the any side frames and any place that appear to be too thick. Lastly, you finish it off with clear gloss paint, thinly.

Woah, it will be super nice (or ugly, haha, you are a risk taker right?). Show it off to your friends that you p0wn a new laptop. FAQ, why risking your laptop if you could just cover all the parts that need to be covered and spray the paint without disammbling it? Well, you could do that, but the paint will be dripping and the layer would be unbalance thick and mostly it will mess the sides of your laptop where there are many ports to be covered.

Sorry, there are parts that I forgot, the screen, do not take it out, just cover it and spray to the part that need to be spray and for the touchpad area, I do not know about that, maybe you need to left that part as original as it is.

So I'm the chicken and you are a crazy bastard if you've done it. Share me some photos if you done it right. And if you are a chicken just like me, haha, just dream on and post a blog about 'doing it'.. LoL..

p/s: If some minor part that left out, well you can figure it out how to do it.

A Documentary to 17th Century Literature

There is nothing new with this photo. I recycled it for my DVD 17th century Documentary Assignment cover. Formerly, this photo used for a multimedia presentation for 'the making of The Servant of Two Masters' theatrical performance back in my Matriculation days. I used the photo of Big Ben London and the Pisa.. an easy and messy Photoshop job. And for the second time i want to used em, I don;t bother to repair some holes here and there..

I am very sad right now. It is because my output video is rendered as HD quality means that it is super large, 6 gig to be exact and I had to delete some of my movies collection, which I am mourning today for my loss!

p/s: As i am in grief, my brain is stop functioning for a temporary period. I unable to write a "attention grabbing" post or correcting my grammar whatsoever.

I forgot, Patch tool kot, Whatever it is, I believed it is under heal tool in Photoshop.

ps: the text is "micro-organism scale". Aiyoh! It is ain't easy to scale the "dirty" typography.

Nusantara 09 Theatrical Performances

I'm just got back from the theatre hall and i couldn't help myself to eagerly post a new post! I'm so exhaust -- even I'm doing nothing but watching the plays -- huhu -- Honetsly, the Alahai...Soto is so amazing. It is like watching La Vita e Bella (Roberto Benigni's Life is Beautiful) again ! It started with comedy, then romance and some suspens then fall with a tragedy. Everything is arranged nicely. However, in some suspens and tragedy there is still 'selit-selit' comedy - biasalah tu, normal people cannot handle drama and serious plays or movies all the way. Hmm.. for Its Takes Two to Tango (aiyoh -- how many T you want huh!) it started still nice but it gets so pale and heavy to carry on -- this is a personal verdict eh! -- aside from the story, your stage concept is very good! take credit for it, I admit, it is so good -- simple, nice, and realistic -- and the transition between the different settings which need to replace some of the props is carefully done. However, both of the plays, it is so typical, It Takes Two to Tango, I predict you kinda switch spouse or anything similiar (yes, I didn't watch it till the end -- I'm getting my cig break) and for Alahai...Soto, I thought the side theme is about a kolot kampong people who thinks people from city is better-- like Yasmin Ahmad's Rabun. I'm dissapointed that it isn't. And why people from city (London to be precise!) has to be so bitchy -- I'm also not watcing your ending.. lol -- I can predict, it must be the London guy change his leaf. Well, whatever it is, the plays is still goin on this Wednesday, and if I had a chance, I want to see the endingto proved that my verdict is wrong!

ps: The posters -- yes it always done by me, they are so horrible-- I only had a two hour to get it finish from scratch. I'm so F busy lately. Im referring to It Takes Two to Tango's poster. The rest is fine! I'm just redefine them!

This is a newsletter developed by English Department students here in IIU and I am their creative director [well the lazy one!] So, what was my purpose putting this image on the web? Well, my jobs is done so I need my pals / anybody [anonymous enable] to comment - improve - idea - want_to_write_article? [sure can! we have collumn for that too..] or anything that you think appropriate to write back. The text look like a holy scripture long? U-huh-Give us a chance!

This is my own theatre performance. I posing as the Bad Angel... sorry i don't have my own photos. me hate my photo being snapped (there's an old saying; a good photographer don't ahave his own photo) huhu. Anyway, this theatre is for my Drama class. So it is not open for public, just for classmates and kinship..thats why my phamplet go on for the next level, MORE gore, MORE blood, and MORE skulls. If it was meant for public, I'm 123456789% sure it i'll be ripped-off the wall. Well, whatever!~ So back to the Bad Angel, let me tell u very graphicly, Im wearing a black robe with hood, covering 80% of my face, and my face is being makeup with some tribal tatoo on my chin up to my cheek with black. Hence our theme is face tatoo. Btw, i forgot, Dr Faustus is pretty gothic itself, Satan, Lucifer, Ifrit, Balzebub and Gehannome (yes, it spells Jahannam). I am very glad that the date is on our side [Friday the 13 is very cool for a gothic play] and the play starts at 11.50 pm MIDNIGHT. and the coolest thing is, when Lucifer lines said "You damn old fool, it is 10 past 12 now" It really is in the real life. Yet another cool thing is our most precious prop. SNAKE. yes you heard me, Living batik python. COOL isn't! wish you were there to see.

p/s: they are still at super large size 3508x2480. Print may fit a4 size, well if you want~

This is the photo shoot for a theatre performance in my matriculation era. For the models, please don't be mad at me because I didn't ask for your permission to upload your photos. LoL. I don't care! I still remember, at the time, me very busy and depressed. Reason? I am the Technician & Preparation guy who does seating and appliances, Sound Engineer (a poor one), and Publicity and Promotion (for the poster and photo shoot). Phew~ , crazy isn't? These photos, the are just fine (or bad one may say). WHY? huhu, this is my first trial becoming a poster artist and photographer.. YAY amature... huhu thanks for the opportunity guys.

I just bought 6 BBC react Shakespeare plays. It cost me 80$.. huhu.. im too lazy to read the script so hopefully this dvds will help me understanding the plays.. huhu apart from BBC production, I also has William Shakespeare Romeo + Juliet.. ala yang Leonardo Dicaprio belakon tu.. mau minjem???? huhu XLEH.. kalo nk gak bg dvd meh aku burn kan...

so all this posters were meant for Nusantara 08 theatrical performance... however, it was postponed to next year and the play [well one of them] was rejected because of the.... well I don't know what are their problems.. so i gotta make new poster to replce the rejected one... DAMN!
